Victoria’s health department confirmed on Wednesday that a child, who had recently returned from overseas, has been diagnosed with the H5N1 strain of avian influenza, marking the first case of human infection with avian flu in Australia.

According to reports from China News Service, citing sources including the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and 9news, the health department spokesperson stated that the child experienced severe symptoms during the infection but has now fully recovered. Contact tracing did not reveal any further cases of avian influenza, and the risk of community transmission is currently considered “very low.”

“Avian influenza generally does not transmit from person to person,” added the spokesperson, emphasizing that the virus primarily affects birds, and although there are many strains of avian influenza, the majority do not infect humans.

Moreover, on the same day, the state’s agriculture and veterinary department announced in a press release that the H7 strain of avian influenza has been confirmed at a poultry farm in western Melbourne. However, the strain found in the infected child is unrelated to the poultry farm outbreak. The farm had to euthanize several hundred thousand chickens and impose a quarantine due to the detection of the H7 virus.

The health department emphasized that while direct contact with animals infected with highly pathogenic avian influenza can lead to human infections, the current risk to the public remains very low.

The department is urging all poultry and bird owners to follow “best practices in biosecurity,” such as maintaining clean breeding environments and limiting contact between domestic fowls and wild birds, to prevent the spread of the virus.
